Photo: Illumination

Illumination — a scary face lit up on black

My self portrait. Where there’s light, there’s darkness, and that darkness, surrounds me. I lit this with a bunch of cheap flashlights, using my camera’s timer. This is how I look after journeying into The Night of Eternal and Unrelenting Darkness. They’re really the same photo, if you look closely.

I removed blemishes, darkened a lot and added contrast, burned the edges of my face to make it more round, re-centered my face in the bottom-right third, and finally converted to black and white, with a bit of blue. The XY coordinate (512,332) in the above is RGB (18,16,21) now, where it should be (17,17,17) for black and white, for example. This adds subtle coldness, which is the best type, anyway.

Photo: The Coy Girl

The Coy Girl — a coquettish lady in sunglasses

A woman in a cute pose wearing sunglasses. This was an impromptu shoot at my college’s photography building; a white wall, wide aperture, and normal fluorescent lighting makes for a studio-like setting.

Using Photoshop’s color channels tool, I moved the blue and cyan selectors all the way to the right, which made the colors perfect.

Photo: The Gaze

The Gaze — a couple looking into each others eyes

Through the eyes of love… or something like that. These are students from my college, who posed for this photograph.

Some of my classmates think they’re about to break into a fist-fight, or that she is backing away fearfully. That wasn’t my intention, but the interpretation is your call.

Photo: The Rebel

The Rebel — a girl smoking in front of a no-smoking sign (shameful!)

Sarah rebels against the no-smoking signs. I posed her for this; she didn’t notice the sign till afterwards. Somehow, we didn’t get in trouble. It was noon-time, but fortunately the light wasn’t too harsh.

This is from 35mm black-and-white film (developed, printed, and digitized). I decided to burn in sign (in Adobe Photoshop); it adds punch. Don’t smoke kids! Cigarettes are too expensive.

Photo: Get Back

Get Back — a man in sunglasses, making the ok hand gesture

A fellow at Daytona Beach College who made the perfect photography subject (sunglasses are always good). It looks like he’s trying to back away, which is the reason for the humorous title. The background is clutted unfortunately, but at least it reveals that the camera is tilted.

Sunglasses — a smiling girl with cool shades

I’ve been talking about branching off into portraiture, and where better to start than at my school? This is a scan of a gelatin-silver 35mm film frame that I developed and printed; the lady is smiling as this is posed, but she looks good nonetheless.
